Hall of Brawl
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX, Dairantō Sumasshu Burazāzu Ekkusu?, lit. "Great Melee Smash Brothers X") is a crossover fighting game developed by Sora and published by Nintendo for the Wii console.[6] As the third installment of the Super Smash Bros. series, Brawl's character roster expands from that of its predecessor, and is the first in the series to feature third-party characters.[7] Most of the game's music is made up of newly-arranged versions of pieces from previously released video games helmed by 39 renowned video game composers.[8]
Brawl was personally announced at a pre-E3 press conference by Satoru Iwata.[9] Later that night, the director of the previous two games in the Smash Bros. series, Masahiro Sakurai, was asked to be the director of the third installment, and he accepted.[10] When development of the game began in October 2005,[11] Nintendo had enlisted the help of various outside developers in an office in Tokyo exclusively for Brawl's development. At E3 2007, Nintendo of America's president, Reggie Fils-Aime, stated that Brawl would be released on December 3, 2007 in the Americas.[12] The date would later be delayed to February 10, 2008[13] and then again to March 9, 2008[14] when the game was finally released.
As with its predecessors, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a departure from traditional fighting games, notably in its simplified move commands and its emphasis on ring outs over knockouts. This installment includes a deeper single-player mode than its predecessors. Known as The Subspace Emissary, this mode is a plot-driven, side-scrolling beat 'em up story featuring CG cut scenes and Brawl's playable characters. Super Smash Bros. Brawl supports multiplayer battles with up to four combatants, and is the first game of its franchise to support online battles through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.[15] Brawl was met with generally positive critical reviews,[16] and has sold over 1.4 million units each in Japan and North America.[17][18]
